Lot Details

Important bohemian brutalist art glass figure by Professor Jan Černý. Featuring an angular female form that morphs through differing colours depending on the light. Signed “Design J Černý” to the lower rear base. As shown in Mark Hill’s excellent book “Sklo… Czech Glass Design from the 1950’s-70’s” (final image) Measuring 255mm tall. Professor Jan Černý (1907-1978) studied wood sculpture at the Chrudim Institute and then at that School of Applied Art in Prague under professors Josef Maratka and Stipl. He then went on to teach glass techniques at Zelezny Brod. He concerned himself with the “essence of shape, sculpture and sculptural cubism” according to the Czechoslovak Glass Review in which his work featured greatly during the early 1970’s.
