Lot Details

Early blenko art glass “tobacco jar”. Designed by Joel Philip Myers and shown in the 1968 Blenko catalogue with a model number 66245. The said catalogue entry only shows the shorter version making this example particularly rare at almost twice the height. Finished in a bright thick walled marbled orange known at Blenko as “Amberina”. The fitted lid is extremely thick in stepped form and features a deep “op art” swirling design to its entirety. Simple tall cylindrical base. 220mm in height by 140mm in diameter. Weighing a substantial 2.9kgs combined. Offered in excellent vintage order. Circa late 1960’s. Joel Philip Myers graduated with honours from the department of advertising design at Parsons School of design in 1954. After spending a year studying ceramic design in Copenhagen, Denmark, Myers earned both a b.f.a. and an m.f.a. from New York state college of ceramics at Alfred university, New York. From 1963 to 1970, Myers served as director of design at the Blenko glass company, in Milton, WV. From 1970 to 1997, he served as the distinguished professor of art at Illinois state university.
