Lot Details

Superb oversized staved Teak mid-century Danish wine bucket / ice store. From the hand of Richard Nissen and carrying the full Danish studios mark beneath. A wonderfully sculptural piece with twin pierced grips. Measuring 400mm in diameter by 210mm high. Richard Nissen was born in Denmark in 1928. After graduating in 1943, he began working in the studio Trævarefabrik. Nissen became operations manager in 1952, decisively changing the profile of the wood products produced in the direction of being a manufacturer of design items. In 1955, he began collaborating with the sculptor Jens H. Quistgaard, and in 1957 bought the studio from his father. Nissens Trævarefabrik came to play a major role in the Danish mid-century Design wave, and for several years Richard Nissen employed about 220 people. Quistgaard went on to design many similar pieces for dansk Design.
