Lot Details

Mid-century Per Lütken for Holmegaard of Denmark art glass “Provence” bowl. An early edition finished in a rich teal blue tone. Fully signed “Holmegaard” beneath along with Lütken’s interlocking initials and a model code “17792”. Beautifully fluid rounded form. A large example measuring 255mm in diameter by 70mm high. Weighing 1.05kgs. Offered in good vintage order with subtle surface wear present and one pin head sized surface mark. During the 1950’s, Per Lütken and his glassblowers developed a technique for blowing glass using the steam from a wet wooden pin, inserted into a gather of molten glass, a technique used in many Holmegaard pieces. This design, the Provence bowl was created by accident in 1955. Lütken was trying to create a glass cone, but forgot to let the steam out of the molten glass. The result was flat like a plate and Lütken used it to create this now classic bowl.
