Lot Details

Mid-century Scandinavian oversized stoneware wall plaque from the Danish studio of Søholm. Featuring a stylized horse and carriage in raised relief with bird perched on top of the horses tail. Artist signed to the lower front “j simon” for Joseph Simon along with an original oval foil Søholm studio label to the upper right front corner. Finished in lovely mocha tones highlighted with blue accents. A large rare example of Simon’s work measuring 360mm by 240mm. 2.45kgs. Studio stamped to the rear along with a model code “3581” Offered in excellent vintage order. Joseph Simon was born 1934 in Hungary and educated at the academy of art in Vienna. He joined Søholm during the 1960’s. Søholm was founded in 1835 in Rønne on the Danish island Bornholm by Herman Sonne Wolffsen (1811-1887) and Edvard Christian Sonne, making it one of the oldest ceramic studios on Bornholm. They produced wares up until 1996.
