Lot Details

Oversized Scandinavian stoneware wall plaque from the Danish studio of Søholm. Designed by Joseph Simon and carrying his signature to the lower right corner. Featuring a male and female on a stylized horse with bird to the rear symbolising a wedding ceremony. Finished in highly glazed bright colours with glass “craquelee” effect contrasting beautifully with the unglazed terracotta toned stoneware elements. Strong metal wall hanger to the rear along with the Søholm studio marks and a model code “3539”. It also has the word “stentøj” meaning stoneware in Danish. 345mm square by 30mm deep. 3.7kgs. Excellent vintage order. Circa late 60’s / early 70’s Denmark. Søholm is a Danish studio based on the island of Bornholm. Joseph Simon joined the pottery in the 1950’s and was responsible along with Noomi Backhausen 1966-1996, Einar Johansen 1958-1966, Nana Ditzel, Haico Nitzsche and Maria Phillippi for the many and varied wall plaque designs of the period.
