Lot Details

1860’s drop case Tavern clock. Text to the painted timber dial reads “Lewis Arundel” Twin turned timber lugs hold the circular face to the rear body. Long weighted adjustable brass pendulum with wind key and small locking key to the base door all present and working as intended. Quality 7 day fusee movement that is period to the clock (1860) though not original. The wide flared design on both the minute and hour hands evolved over the years due to these clocks spending their lives in dark English taverns, and such became discoloured with tobacco smoke and coal and wood fires. The hands were coated in a red wax to make them more visible to customers in the darkened room’s pre electricity. A very important clock offered fully serviced and keeping excellent time. Measuring 570mm tall by 350mm wide at the dial.
