Lot Details

Superb early 20th century English bow fronted cased chub. No taxidermists label though almost certainly the work of John Cooper & Sons of 28 Radnor Street, St. Lukes, London. Paper label for the angler reads “Caught by W. Thompson at Knowle Sands, Bridgenorth, Wgt. 3lbs, 15ozs, 4drms” Beautifully preserved in a naturalistic setting. Loop metal hangers to the upper case. Gold lead twin black pinstripes to the bow fronted glass typical of Coopers work. The pastel teal blue painted rear was also a colour used by cooper during a transitional period between the 1920’s and 1940’s when the cases became more streamlined with less weed and decoration, much in line with current decorating trends. Earlier late 19th century cased fish tended to have a lot more vegetation and a more sky blue background. Again as tastes changed into the 1940’s and 1950’s the fish themselves tended to have painted scales to exaggerate the overall appearance. This fish will sit nicely before that period somewhere after the 1920’s. Measuring 680mm in length by 185mm deep at the bow by 340mm high. An important example offered in exceptional condition.
